Brothers

Motherhood has such a way of slapping you in the face, doesn’t it? I mean I’ve found myself wishing for something one minute, only to get it the next and curse it through and through regardless. Like the day Van was born and I “couldn’t wait” for him to get to know his brother. Now he knows his brother and you know what? His brother’s one big bully. Now I find myself eager for the day Van can stand and balance, and well, fend for himself. Though I know I’ll be cursing those days where they’re here too.
Anyone have any helpful hints on building a friendly sibling relationship? I can practically hear my mom laughing through the computer screen.

  • I can hear mom laughing through the computer screen, too–loud and clear. Tips for building a friendly sibling relationship? Wait 20 years.

  • I have two older brothers who are pretty close in age, the eldest hated the youngest when he first came along. They got on great from then onwards. I think the common interest that brought them together was torturing me.

So, maybe have a daughter too?

  • A friendly sibling relationship??? whats that?? ๐Ÿ˜‰
the one thing you have going for you, is that age difference… sometimes between the refereeing and time outs, mine will sit there and play together quietly. until, for example, one decides he wants to be buzz instead of woody and the other one says he can’t… then it’s war. We’re at the point that they like to ride bikes together, and stick up for each other against bullies at the park, plus they don’t like going anywhere without the other. I guess everyone has their moments, but i love seeing my boys (3 & 4) holding hands walking to the park, when i don’t remember my sisters ever being nice to me. so, i think waiting is key… but i don’t think you have to wait as long with boys, than you would with girls. good luck!

  • I know exactly what you mean about the older one being a bully to the younger one. Luckily, I think we both have the same situation where the younger one is going to end up BIGGER than the older one and suddenly things will even out. When I watch my 2 boys go at it, I’m reminded of the way lion cubs play so physically with each other and bug the hell out of the momma lion until she just gets up and walks away (or bats at them with that giant paw which effectively stops everything.). Keep in mind that boys play much differently than girls; they need that physicality. They beat each other up but they laugh and scream and cry all at the same time and then they’re over it 5 minutes later. Honestly, I’ll take the straightforward rough housing of boys over the sneaky mind games of girls any time!

  • I only have one kid but my sister and I are less than a year apart. I know for my mom she literally woke up one morning and we were playing together. Not that we didn’t have our fair share of squabbles, fights, dislocated shoulders (that would be mine), and “I hate you moments” but I’m pretty sure you will turn around one day, a couple months down the line, and they will be sitting in a corner quietly playing together. I know my daughter was well over 1 year old before she took any interest at all with playing with others. I’d say, just keep doin’ what you’re doin’. Hooper will get the hang of not ganging up on Van. And Van will get the hang of legitimately beating his older brother in an arm wrestle. And they will be pals.

  • Mine adore each other. But then I think the 19 year gap between the eldest and the youngest helps. So maybe wait a few years for bub number three?
